Walk report 2022 Oct 10

The steepest day

Ten walkers gathered in glorious autumn sunshine at the Old Bell in Oxted on October 10 and set off northwards towards the imposing escarpment of the North Downs.

Crossing the M25

The group crossed open meadows before passing the gated Barrow Green Court estate, former home of businessman and conspiracy theorist Mohammed al Fayed.

After crossing the M25, navigator Dave paused the group to warn them the “steep climb” which he had intimated was imminent. Some members were surprised he had omitted “long” from the description. After much huffing and puffing, all reached the summit and welcomed the convenient bench with its extensive views over the Weald towards the South Downs.

Huffing and puffing en route to the "summit"

The route then followed the North Downs Way down newly repaired steps directly over the Oxted Railway tunnel and contoured along Oxted Downs and round the former chalk pit and lime works. The open southward vistas under the bluebird sky continued to delight the walkers until the route turned south back towards Oxted town. A few short stretches on roads led to the tunnels under Oxted station and the Oxted Inn just beyond. Beers were especially welcome after over four miles and over two hours hard going in the heat.

The temperature dropped dramatically as we sat outside the pub, where our songs drew applause from the appreciative audience. Although tired, the group voted for the more scenic return leg past Oxted Mill. Back at the Old Bell enormous quantities of food were ordered. The staff were delighted that we ate every morsel and thrilled at our parting rendition of Can’t help falling.
