Walk report, on 2022 Sept 5

Rendezvous in Bogey Lane

On September 5, a group of 14 assembled at the Greyhound in Keston, the venue used by the choir committee for its meetings.

En route to Bogey Lane

The group included four women, almost certainly a record, and saw the debut outing by top tenor Peter Eustace and his wife Lyn.  The walkers traversed farmland and rolling downland and posed for a photograph in Bogey Lane, an ancient sunken trackway.

A highlight of the route was the Wilberforce Oak near Holwood House, where William Wilberforce purportedly discussed the evils of the slave-trade with Pitt the Younger before embarking on his campaign to have it abolished.

Halftime saw the group at the Woodman in Farnborough, where it had previously scored free beer from the landlady, but this time there was no such offer. The drinkers were swollen by Stewart and Pat Robinson and Rob and Sue Newall, who live nearby.

Then it was back to the Greyhound where the walkers dispersed, leaving the two committee members (Dave and Pete) to join their colleagues in their unstinting toil at a committee meeting on the members’ behalf.
