Walk report 2022 August 15

Off and walking at Epsom

Tweve walkers gathered outside the Beefeater at Tattenham Corner overlooking Epsom race course in sunny weather on August 15 but thankfully cooler temperatures. Early arrivals were dismayed when the barkeep announced there was no beer.  This was rectified when his manager realised the potential lost business and some was magically produced.

The group welcomed former MD Roger Pinsent who had made the short journey from Fetcham to hand over choir music and retrieve his personal music stand. Former chorister Ted Mouat’s widow Lyn also joined the group for the first time.

The group set off across and then parallel to the race track in front of the grandstand. Unfortunately, before reaching the finishing post, old warhorse Polly Perkins at the back of the field pulled up lame. While the rest of the runners and riders strode off towards Walton Downs, Polly was left to complete a much reduced circuit, pausing to buy a book in a charity shop before settling in back at the Beefeater.

The route followed a straight line all the way to Walton-on-the-hill. Navigator Dave boosted morale with promises of ice cream in a Walton cafe, but near-tragedy struck when this was found to be closed. Fortunately the owner took pity on us weary walkers and opened specially to provide the promised ice creams.

These were consumed on benches overlooking the arid expanses of the extensive but totally dry Walton “pond”. From there it was a short stroll through the woods for further refreshment at the charming yet hidden pub, officially named The Bell but for mysterious reasons also known as The Rat.

The return journey was again a direct line back to the racecourse, and then across it back to the Beefeater to rendezvous with Polly. Dinner was enjoyed outside on a glorious summer evening overlooking Epsom Downs. Ditties were naturally sung, resulting in an invitation from diners at a nearby table to perform at a later date at the local Conservative Club.
