Walk report 2021 Nov 29

A walk and a sing for Dot

It was an early start for seven walkers gathering at the Sir Julian Huxley at 11am on November 29. Those who determined the sun was over the yardarm somewhere in the world enjoyed a couple of beers; others preferred coffee while contemplating the busy schedule ahead, with frosty ground to be covered.

As the group were due to sing at Dot Stevens’ former care home at 3pm, George Taylor was dispatched to the nearby chemists to obtain Lateral Flow tests for all. Experienced testers coached others and soon all were gagging as the swabs were inserted.  Fortunately the beer (and/or coffee) were at hand to aid recovery.

After confirming a clean bill of health, the walkers left the pub at noon and crossed into Littleheath Woods.  With a distinct chill in the air, and frost underfoot, the walkers joined the London Loop and continued along Bramley Bank through Heathfield onto Addington Hills.  The group paused at the viewpoint and enjoyed the open vistas across to London. Some unfamiliar with the area were amazed that so much rural walking country was available close to Croydon.

As the group descended towards Oak Road and the track towards Oak Farm and Lloyd Park, messages were broadcast to indicate progress towards the rendezvous where other choir members were waiting. The walkers sent WhatsApp location messages – those waiting at The Skylark pub replied with photos of the pints they were already consuming.

This encouraged a quickening of the walkers’ pace, especially during the last mile along Coombe Road. After a total of four miles they strode virtuously into the pub to greet their colleagues and soon all were tucking into lunch and more beer.

Autumn colours still showing in Littleheath Woods

Although time was still tight to reach the care home by 3pm, the group was required to serenade the waitresses with a rendition of Can’t Help Falling in Love. And naturally encores were demanded and delivered. The breathless choir arrived only a few minutes late at the care home to join yet more choristers and the expectant audience (see Home Page for full report). After an hour’s performance those with remaining energy were led by local Martin Perkins past his flat down to the Royal Standard (and yet more beer).
