Racing over Epsom Downs

Ten walkers gathered at Tattenham Corner on the breezy but sunny beer garden overlooking the celebrated racecourse on Epsom Downs on Monday, 17 June. After topping up their fluid levels, they set off over the course and then across the training gallops on Walton Downs.

From there it was almost straight to the M25, where the acoustics of a cavernous tunnel supported the inevitable rendition of My Lord. Martin "Polly" Perkins was soon leading the way as he sniffed the half time halt at the Cock Inn in Headley, where Ted Mouat was already ensconced.

Light and shade in the woods

The walkers settled into deckchairs and outdoor sofas for 30 minutes' beer and relaxation.  Dave the Navigator prompted them into life by reminding them that there were still three miles to cover on the return leg.  We paused at St Mary's Church for a quick rendition of Jacob's Ladder, then it was back under the M25 and past Walton Downs until Epsom Grandstand came into view once more.

Refreshment pause at The Cock

The sun had provoked considerable thirst among the walkers, whose patience was tried by technical issues in the provision of beer once back at the pub.  Eventually all was sorted and the walkers tucked happily into their dinners.
