The CMVC walking group marked its return to action with a record eight members taking part in a circular walk in Surrey on July 2, starting and ending at Chelsham Common.

The four-mile walk, under a cloudy sky, took the group through a mix of woodland and open fields.  In a number of places, where the footpaths were overgrown, the walkers had to establish the route.  There were also numerous stiles to surmount.

The walk was conducted at a leisurely pace, the group departing from the Coach House pub at Chelsham Common at 10.45 and returning at 1.30.

This was the first choir walk in almost a year, following the hiatus caused by the indisposition of group convenor Peter Gillman.  Peter was one of two members taking part following recent knee operations – the other being Ralph Osborne.

The choir’s bass section was strongly represented with six walkers: Pete Smith, Chris Beckley, Barry O’Gorman and Ian Harmer (accompanied by his black labrador Skye) plus messrs Gillman and Osborne.  “This endorses the section’s standing as the choir’s engine room,” commented Pete Smith, bass section leader.

The other two walkers were from the Second Tenors: Dick Jones and Trevor Watkins.  There were no top tenors or baritones present.  Ted Mouat (another second tenor) joined the group at lunchtime.

Plans are already afoot for another walk in late July or early August.  July 31 and August 7 have both been mooted as possible dates.
